Stream Restoration Drivers – The Federal Perspective

There are many drivers supporting the growing field of Stream restoration and mitigation, some of which are EPA programs. A handful of grant programs at EPA support various aspects of stream restoration, including direct funding of restoration projects and building capacity at the federal, state, tribal and local levels to understand and evaluate stream restoration.  In addition, many programs that have traditionally focused on identifying impairments and developing plans to address them are beginning to specifically identify the value of stream restoration practices for specific impairments.  Lastly compensatory mitigation under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act continues to be a major driver of stream restoration and statistics from the two main Corps databases tracking regulatory actions show interesting trends.
