Challenges & Opportunities for Stream Restoration and Floodplain Reconnection/Restoration

 

Dave Rosgen, PhD, PH

Dave is a Professional Hydrologist and Geomorphologist with field experience in river work spanning 49 years, 20 of which were with the U.S. Forest Service. Dave has designed and implemented over 70 large-scale river restoration projects. Dave developed a stream classification system, the BANCS streambank erosion model, the FLOWSED/POWERSED sediment transport models, the WARSSS methodology for cumulative watershed assessment, and a geomorphologic approach to Natural Channel Design restoration methodology. Dave utilizes his extensive experience to conduct short courses in watershed management, river morphology, restoration, and wildland hydrology applications. Dave is also the author of Applied River Morphology and Watershed Assessment of River Stability and Sediment Supply (WARSSS) and over 70 reports and articles in research journals, symposia, and federal agency manuals. Dave and his projects have been featured in Time, Science, 5280, National Geographic, The Denver Post, and The New York Times.

 

Todd S. Bridges, PhD

Dr. Todd Bridges is a Professor of Practice in resilient and sustainable systems in the College of Engineering at the University of Georgia.  Prior to joining UGA in 2023, he served for 17 years as the Senior Research Scientist (ST) for Environmental Science for the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).  Over his 30-year career with USACE, Bridges led >$250 million in research projects and programs in environmental science and engineering and sustainable infrastructure.  He founded the Corps’ Engineering with Nature® program (www.engineeringwithnature.org) in 2010, which includes a broad range of research, field-scale applications, multi-sector collaborations, and communication efforts to advance the delivery of nature-based solutions.  Among his 100 publications, Bridges led a 5-year collaboration across the public and private sectors to develop and publish International Guidelines on Natural and Nature-Based Features for Flood Risk Management.  Dr. Bridges received a Distinguished Presidential Rank Award from President Biden in 2021 for exceptional leadership, accomplishments, and service.

David Brown
Jennings Environmental

David graduated from Clemson University with a bachelor’s degree in Geology and is a professional geologist with 38 years of experience in environmental consulting, restoration, and regulation. His career spans a wide range of experience in the environmental field working with state and federal agencies and private entities in 32 states. This experience includes both management and technical performance on environmental studies and projects completed under federal and state regulatory agency programs. He joined Jennings Environmental in 2022 following previous employment as a consulting geologist (1986-2008) and environmental regulator (2009-2021) with the US Army Corps of Engineers in Asheville, NC. David considers himself a sojourner in the field of geology and environmental restoration….a jack of lot and expert of some, maybe

Bob Siegfried has 35 years of experience in NEPA and 404 permitting, including design, construction, and monitoring of wetland and stream mitigation sites.  As part of a large team, he led the stream design team that completed 70 miles of restoration and enhancement on the largest Permittee Responsible Mitigation site in the U.S.  As a Sr. Project Manager at RES, he is currently working to change how stream mitigation is measured and monitored.
