Bayou St. John is a 6.3 km long waterway located entirely within the city of New Orleans. This field trip will focus on several topics, including the natural history of the bayou, human impacts on the bayou from colonization to modern times, and recent efforts to restore habitat along and within Bayou St. John.

Challenges & Opportunities for Stream Restoration and Floodplain Reconnection/Restoration
The panel will delve into the challenges and opportunities tied to stream restoration, specifically floodplain reconnection within FEMA's no-rise policy framework. This dialogue aims to identify pathways that harmonize restoration objectives with regulations, recognizing potential trade-offs in achieving both ecological restoration and adherence to FEMA's flood elevation and floodway standards. The panel will also explore stream restoration and FEMA grant-funded programs such as the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC), Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) Program, and the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) to bolster flood risk management and enhance watershed resilience.
