A Canadian (Ontario) Perspective on River Restoration

Canadian stream restoration practices vary across the country. In Ontario, the stream restoration industry is striving to implement successful projects with limited funding and relatively strict agency regulations. This presentation will provide an overview of the state of the practice within Ontario including the regulatory oversight, applicable guidance documents, current design approaches, emerging trends, and some examples of recent successful projects.

About Ed Gazendam, PhD, PE
Ed Gazendam is the President and Sr. Geomorphologist of Water's Edge, a niche consulting firm offering applied fluvial geomorphological and natural channel design expertise to public and private clients since 2004. He has over 25 years of experience in restoring stream systems across Ontario.

Ed earned his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD from the University of Guelph in water resources engineering focusing on surfacewater hydrology & hydraulics, sediment transport, and stream processes. 

Ed is also a member of Ontario’s provincial Natural Channels Initiative Committee.
